Eugenio Recuenco

I dont really know too much about this photographer, i just found these images and i quite like the idea of the use of fairy tails and childrens stories but adding this hash realty and making them seem unclean and child like. its just quite a nice high end fashion work and i thinnk you can see how it dose relate to my work. It could agian be somthing i could explore more the fansty or twisting well know children stories i just think this is nice editoral fashion work

four images

here are my 4 images that i haded in for Dinu Li to crit and look at i think im ahppy with 3 of them, but the one of rachel just dosnt fit any more the clours i have used are just not right all the other images have a lot of contrast and a cold feel wich is lost in the bed shot so i think that image is needed to be reshot i think i will use the bed but shot from a diffent angle and bring in the same tonal range

Dinu Li is a prastising photographer in manchester and he is coming to crit are work and give us a talk on his work and some work shops on vermeer.

these 3 images to the left are from the serise Press the star, Then say hello its again like the one below its about people emergrating to the uk and how they live, this project is about people calling their homes and speaking to loved ones i really like this pic of work and i think its works wel how close he is to the subject seems like hes invading their space to an extent.

he said it was in a small box room in a internet caff. thier seems to be a sence of the images being staged it an extent but when i found out that they wornt made the images more powerful its intresting to me how people did let him photograph them as i could see these phone conversations being quite emounal and privet. It shows it can be done you just need to be ready to ask and not botherd if people say no i supose that the wost that can happen really.




















this series of work is called Secret Shadows and its about people come from diffent contrys to england to get a job and money as its seen, allmost the new amican dream ware people come expecting posperty and have to live with little when their arive and are often taken addvantage of.

so these images here are expoloring the places that these people live in and its showing their personal spaces and how they have made them more like home












i think these images mean more when you know the storie behind the project what some of the odjects mean for example this picture on the left could be anything allmost but the signifcance of the colf pocket makes the image, the colf pocket is filled with soil from their home town wich their mother gave them. so from knowing this it makes the space much more personal it changes from just a some wall paper, because the wall paper adds conertations

I wanted to keep the contrast with these images im pretty happy with the out come all i need to do i think is to burn out the light and bring out the contrast a bit more and try and bring out some more detail in alex it was a farly symple shoot just was in a very tite space this is my final image i have got from the shoot im pretty happy with the out come

Peater Talyor

i think my favort images from this are the ones of me im not sure if peater quite managed to get that moment i was looking for perhaps its my falt not being able to direct him propley. But i think i manage to get the feeling that i just notest it so i will be useing one of my own images of my self i do wonder thos if this dose have problems of having it as a self portrait if people may read somthing in to the image that i donst want them to. i did not intend to use the image of myself it was just test shots but i feel they work. and the image below is my final one from this shoot. i am really happy with this image i think its the blue from my top i like and thats really what sets it apart from the shots with peter in them. I think because i knew what i wanted its a lot easer to aceive than explaning it to a modle to

these images show the proses from the frist to the last frist being the original image to the last which is the final one i have chosen, i will talk about my final image seprut. i think its intresting to look at the diffents from the frist eddited image to the last i found it very easy to go to far, its easy on photogshop to just get to carryed away and then you can lose the feel of the image it just looks to fake not that the images look evey day, i want them to look almost posibal. not to sure if that makes sence but i know what i mean. so i think from the frist second image wich is far to over the top you can see how i tryed to make it look crisper and more real and not over saturated or to burnt out


















So this is the final image that i ended up with from the first image at the top the most trouble i had was with the frount of the bed and i ended up having to put a new frount in from a prevouse image ware it had be lit by flash as in the prints you just couldn get any deatil from it. i think im happy with this shot it dose however seem alot diffent from the other image of stu, i will have to see if it fits in when i have taken my later shots

Stu 2


I thought i needed to reshoot the image with stu i didnt think the image before was good enouth i think it could of just been better thought out and planed as the frist shoot was just trying it out, and i was happy with the out come but i thought it could of been much better and im really happy with this shoot

these images are what i got from the shoot i do think that in some respects that what i wanted to aceve would be all most imposibal with out photoshop at lest with the limatations i have as i dont have mounths for one shot or the budget of a small film to creat the images, as apose to Credson who i think im taking a lot of infolnce from with this work.









this is the final image that i am going to use, im happy with the out come i wanted to chach that moment of when he frist notests it and the reaction would allmost be involentry and he hasnt had time to think what it is. I think it works. as you can tell i did use a lot of photoshop in the image and this did make me feel slitly dirty and that i was cheating but i do think to get the same

the second image is much closer to Vermeers work and i think the first is quite like what i want to acheave with this strong flash. its interesting to see this work come from one photographer, which shows both what i would like to achieve and this very dark Vermeer esk image.

i think with my work i want to create a felling of fantasy to my image it seems to be lost here in a sence it seems that the light inst important to the image and whats it trying to say, almost just their to add interest to the image. i think the models relationship to the light is important and this image dosnt seem at tall contected to it.





as apose to this shot ware hes staring out towards the light it makes you wonder what it is hes looking at and his poising with in the shot and how hes half dressed make me wonder whats going on beaund the image


this work has been taken from a series of work called color and light
so it may not really matter that their is a relationship or a storie behind the images i just think it makes the image much more interesting if it is possible to make a storie about it. this is much more like Gregory Crewdson work wich i have all ready looked at.

Philip-Lorca diCorcia Heads

Phililp-Lorca diCorcia i think has helped to redefine the treadition of street photography. by bring in flash and setting up the shot to some extent. in this streetwork searise diCorcia captured these unexpected predations and to some extend turned them in to prformers. the strobe light picks unsepecting passerbys in the crowds. the light gives a sertan grativty to their facial expressions and eveything around them seems to fall in to insenifance

i think its relevance to Vermeer is manly with the image of the girl with the peal earing, the gase is quite silmular of being one of a split second look a gase oveer the sholder and the backround being black even thos its quite a leap from the studo bast patings of vemmer ware every odject in the image is the thought about and every stoke consived before hand to this street work wich is chaching that split second and it could be anything and the model is allmost compley chosen by chance.


Unaware of the camera, the subject are absorbed in thought, they act how we would if we wear walking down the street in a crowd focouse on somthing or nothing. but offten alone. their expressions become
riddled with fellings of melodrama.

Erwin Olaf


Erwin Olaf

I think you can see the connection between his work and Vemmers even tho the seem very different, i think the tonal range being very bland but the face that he has chosen to keep to these tones like Vemeer. Except that Vemmer chose strong bold coulours.

Probly the most ovouse connection is going to be the natural lighting from this series. the stylistics are what make these images interesting the setting how clean and false everything seems to be even the model are being quite formal. I do wonder why he wanted to create this 70's feel to the images with the choice in fashion and the style of the rooms



i quite like the formal feel to these images it all most makes you feel uncomfortable to look at them
perhaps the second image more so. But in affect the most interesting part of these images is the styling it seems a odd choice to uses this very kich look. Also i like how perfict every the rooms seem to be juckaposed from the modles.

Vemeer 2

so now iv done me test shoot and i was really surprised with the out come i will now be looking at continuing that serrise of work, by keeping that idea of the lighting and changing the situation that the modle is in, i think i want a symular responce from models the sort of child like intrest

i think i want to capture them doing very normal tasks round the house and perhaps one out side with them walking toward the light so their is going to be a searise i just need to think what will be in it.

i was thinking having another shot in the kiction with some one getting some milk out of the fridge and then droping it. or just siting on the sofa waching t.v

im not to sure right now, i think i need to reshoot the frist image frist then try some ideas out and do some more resurch

Iv been thinking about what i am trying to say with these images and i think that i just want to leave a lot up to the viewer to what the light is so much so that i dont want to say what i think it is ment to be, for me i like being able to look at an image and create my own storie up about it and not to be that lead by the photographer, or at lest with work like this. For exapme Crewdsons work seems to be taken at the peak of a moment or just after somthing has happend and it is left to you to make up a storie about what has happend. In mine i think all that i want left open is what the light is whats behind it. so i will be looking at the people interacting with the light diffently some not notesting it others that theiy have just came across it and maybe people invesgating the light i think i will have to see when i have the images but i want them to be very open in a sence, ovosly conertations are made from a bright light but as to wich a person thinks it is, is up to them. i think its intresting idea that when ur work has been published it isnt urs or the meaning can be lost very easly so with these images im going to leave them untitled and i think i will try and take as meny signs out of the images as i can
