Vermeer

We have been asked to study the paintings of vermeer and try to interpret the meanings behind the work to produce a series of work in responce.


this painting girl with he pearl earing is his welts know pice its how ever isnt common with his style of work. he seems to of just cought a passing glance it looks like then i think about what the revence of the peal earings i think its seems to be a juck to persision, as the moble was a servent and the earing speak of wealf. its offtern with his work their is one directonal light coming from the left with most of his work. i do think i will allmost enor this image as it isnt that common to his normal style wich im more intrested in.



this image is much more intresting to me as it keeps to his style more so. he oftern has one soft light coming in from the windows. also i quite like how the person is doing a mundane task evey day. their is allways a i think i willl take this idear for my first shoot having the person doing somthing very normal

I have notest with a number of his images the subject seemes to be unenvoled with what the their doing. I want to look at the revence of the items in the image as its a painthing i would of thought eveything is thought out and has a meaning. perhaps its harder for us to see with the changes in time
their allways seems to obe a quite muted choice with the coulors that are used with in his work and their is allways only a few strong coulours coming out from his work. off tern the fabric has the boldest coulrs.

The woman in this painting dosnt seem to be intrested in playing the lute she seems to be looking out of the window wich makes me think of what is beyound the image what is out side to take her attation its offtern the case with Vermmers work that the person dosnt seem conted to what she is doing or intrested in it. it could be a momentry glance away that somthign just grabed their attation for a split second. i say this because you get the same feel with the painting the girl with the pearl earing that its is just a momentry look. Perhaps that what he is intrested in showing



Gregory Crewdson

His film still work seems to capture the image at the peak of the storie and it seems to work so well beacuse you can make you own stoier up about the images about how they got into that situation.
I really want to creat some sort of fansty towards my images. His shear budget that mactes a small film for some of his shoots and the conrtol he has within the image is ovoues eveything in the image is their for a reason to help lead you. This is quite similar to the work of vermeer and painting in general. His images i think speak for them self in many way you can see the budget he used must of been huge and the quality stands out.


i like the play on fanasty to the image with the light wich could been seen as ever a rilgous expence or e.t. i think thats the sort of feeling that i want to put acroos with my set of images but to be much closer to the modle and for the model to seem intreaged not scared and a look of insernts a child like reaction.












with this image i just love the eye for deatial with in it having such a small part of the image so important this is the girl in the window on the bouttom right i just think its grate how these little points within the image are so important you allmost need to hunt round the image to find it.










Tom Hunter

Tom Hunter images you can see their is a huge inverlonce from Vemmer it a modern day verson of his work and photography seems to lead it self to this modern approce. The bleak room seems normal with Vemmer work along with the natural lighting and the use of fabric.
I dont think i really want to go down this aproce i want to move much further away from it in a sence instead of just lifting what has all ready been done i would like to take it in another direstion and to have a theam running thought the scries








with this work i allmost think it is tomuch of a direct lift of what Vemeer did i do think the portraits are very nice and what the images are showing looks beutifull but i dont see any clever twist wich leads you to think about the images and why he has done them. i think in images like this odjects within the shot are key and evey item needs to be in the image for a reason and for it to be thought out. Allmost think the shadow is to harsh and to much daitle is lost.



















so these are things i want to look at for my first shoot as i would like to be able to get his styles right before moving on to doing something different what i think i will be doing for this first deadline is that im going to try and keep his lighting in mind by having a a strong light coming thought the window showing some one doing a very mundane task, i want to have the modle staring off to the light out the window as if hes not their like hes some ware else or looking at something misterous and not paying attention to the what hes doing.

this is the best out of the digtal images, it shows what i was looking for i think i need to pay much more attation to what objects are put in to the image.
Im not to sure if their is much i would change to this picture i think i now want to conture with this idea further. i think i will need to find other locations to use around the house with some one doing very normal mundain things and beeing cought just as the light is notest. i like having the water over flowing shows hes lost all intrest in that and now this light is much more intresting.











Here are some other images from the shoot i think you will agree that the one above is better having the hand up i think is just a second or two too late really allmost wantted to just cach it, so it would be as soon as their have seen the light that intace ware he first glances up. i do perfure some of the crops to these images i will have to see how it comes out on film to see if i need to reshoot i think i do and at that time i want to look at useing object to give a certain meaning towards the image.

Personal space frist ideas

Edward T Hall frist came up with the idea of personal space, and created a set of messaubal distances between people as they interact depending on the connection between the people, this in what i entend to show. i want to find away of photographing these distances.

I think personal space is oftern seen as somthing that is complety personal i want to prove it can be subjective depending on the people around you for instance you would be happer to be closer to a close friend than a stranger on the street

I can show this by getting people off the street all with different relationships and getting them to walk towards each other and then telling them to stop when their start to feel uncontable close.


another idea i have i think is more of an interesting one but for the length of this project i don't know if its very viable i want to denie people of their personal space. for this i will have to get about 30 people have them in a tite square in a wide open space

Halifax advert

this is in affect what i would like to achieve with my image i think i couldn't do it on such a scale, im not to sure if its that much of a viable idea for this short project as i would be looking of doing a searse of this on different locations i do think the affect works and in a more regul square it would look more impressive. but this is an example of what i would like to shoot. haveing lots of space ware they could go but they are dening them self of any personal space at tall.

Extre Gum
i really like the play on personal space in this advert I think it works well to get the point across.

I think the hole advert was really well shot its an example ware personal space is complety enoued and its not cared about.

what i need to do

Just spoke with Sarah and i think she liked both my ideas and we agreed the best one to take up would be my frist about how publick space is subjective. I am aloud to use students for this project as well as getting people off the street. i need to find a location???
for it to work well i need to shoot at one spot and not change anything with the framing so then the diffances of ware each person is becomes more apparent.
I want it to be in a bussy punlick space but some ware, ware i can take these images with out people walking in the back round.

so next i think i will have to do a recky and find a suitable location i think i know a posibal place just up from peair.

need to be able to get these people down to the spot so i dont want it that far from college too.

i want about 10 images at lest so i need to get 20 people to come down



Frist Shootthis is the final out come from my shoot i did ask alot of people to come down but i found a number just let me down. so i ended up having to ask more people than i first expected.
their are a few problems with the image i found it harder for people to be happy to help if their were alone and they wernt really happy walking towards a person.
also theirs a big change within the light from the nice light with the strong shadows at the bottom to the much darker images at the top. if i reshoot i think i will tyr and get their at noon and be shooting till 2 after then i feel the light may be to dark. i think together the images work well and im really happy with some ware the people embrased each other. I do think i needed to get some more people who didnt know each other to do it

Favort images


these are my favort images that i have used for this project and i likes these images because i think the older groups of people seemed to embrace each other to an extent with out being ask to with i think shows that they are really coftable with each other. as apose to the only one ware i had people who dont know each other worked out well to i think it intresting to see how people feel diffent about personal space and some are happer to be closer than others. i think i need to shoot needed to shoot more for this project and to change the location having the peir in the image adds conertations of the sea side then some people could read that as a sign for somthing that i dont want. i think i will need to find a blank location with nothing in the image to read other than people and the space betwen them. but i do need to keep it in a farly bussy place so then i am able to get people off the street to modle for me.

i did tyr to reshoot for the project but i have lost the images to be honist wich isnt too cool but the images wernt very good to be honist it just didnt work at tall i moved a bit further down from ware i shot before and i couldnt get enouth people to come i think it was out of season and it just wasnt bussy enouth also i had some problem with the light again it just took to long to get people
